BCL factions clash over an affair with a female student, 10 injured

At least 10 activists of ruling Awami league student wing were injured in clashes between two rival factions on Sunday on Jagannath University campus in the city.
Two of the injured were admitted to a local clinic in critical condition.

Witnesses said the clashes ensued at about 1:00pm, when some activists loyal to JnU BCL president Kamrul Hasan Ripon swooped on a group of activists loyal to JnU BCL general secretary Gazi Abu Sayeed following a brawl over an affair with a female student of the university.

Later, after regrouping themselves, a number of activists loyal to the general secretary attacked on a group of its rival faction on the Arts Faculty premises at around 2:00pm. The BCL men used various lethal weapons during the hour-long clash, in which at least 10 of them were injured.

They also vandalised a number of classrooms of the Arts Faculty, a newly constructed academic building, and the cafeteria of the university.

On information, university proctor Ashok Kumar Saha and a team of Kotowali police rushed to the scene and brought the situation under control.

Kotowali police station officer-in-charge Salahuddin said additional police forces have been deployed on the campus to thwart any further clashes.’

Ashok Kumar Saha said the university authorities had formed a five-member committee led by law teacher Akkas Ali to investigate into the incident.
